On December 9. 1981, a 25-year-old Philadelphia Police Officer named Daniel Faulkner was murdered by Mumia Abu-Jamal. The officer was conducting a car stop on Locust Street in downtown Philadelphia. The car that Faulkner stopped was driven by William Cook, who was the younger brother of Mumia Abu-Jamal. As Faulkner arrested Cook, Mumia Abu-Jamal, a Black Panther Party member and cab driver, ran from across the street and shot him in the back. Faulkner was able to turn and return fire, striking Abu-Jamal in the chest. Faulkner fell to the ground, grievously injured. Abu-Jamal stood over the downed officer and shot him four more times at close range, once directly in the face.

Abu-Jamal was arrested at the scene with the gun used to kill Faulkner found on his person. Three eyewitnesses saw Abu-Jamal commit the homicide. He also was heard by two witnesses in the hospital admitting that he did the shooting. He was found guilty at trial. His several appeals did not change the finding of the jury that he was guilty.
