The University of Georgia (UGA) campus has been shaken by a series of alarming incidents this week, including two deaths and an armed robbery, leaving the university community seeking answers and reassurance about their safety.

The most troubling of these events unfolded today when a woman was found dead in a wooded area near the UGA Intramural Fields. She had been reported missing earlier in the day after failing to return from a run. Authorities, suspecting foul play, have launched an investigation with assistance from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Athens-Clarke County Police Department. The identity of the woman, as well as her connection to the university, has not been disclosed.

This discovery comes on the heals of another student being found dead last night at Brumby Hall, a residence hall on campus. The details surrounding this death have been kept under wraps, with the university and police providing little information.

Amid these tragic events, it was only three days ago that the UGA community was unnerved by an armed robbery in which a 19-year-old student was targeted by an armed assailant while walking on campus. The robber, whose face was concealed with a purple bandanna, put a gun to the student’s head, demanding her phone. Demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, the student suggested to her assailant that she could provide an additional phone if allowed to call a friend. The victim then placed a call to a friend and covertly communicated her situation in Korean. The victim’s friend sounded the alarm, leading to a police chase and the swift arrest of 17-year-old Jeremiah Scott, who now faces multiple charges, including armed robbery and aggravated assault.

These incidents have understandably rattled the campus, prompting a widespread discussion about campus safety and the measures in place to protect students and staff. In response to the immediate concerns, UGA officials have encouraged the use of the UGA Safe app, which provides safety features such as emergency notifications and real-time location sharing with police. Additionally, the university has emphasized the importance of vigilance, recommending that individuals travel in groups and remain aware of their surroundings. Classes were canceled following the discovery of the body near the Intramural Fields, allowing students and faculty time to process the news and grieve.
