Rex Heuermann, the alleged Long Island Serial Killer (LISK), is due in court Tuesday for a bail hearing.
He’s not getting bail, but it’s a chance for us to examine the two questions remaining in the case:
Did Heuermann kill the other victims found in Gilgo? In sum, 11 bodies were found. Shannon Gilbert, as we’ve written before, was likely an accidental drowning. Heuermann is charged in 3, and will likely be charged with the fourth, found nearby and bearing all his signatures. But what of the other 6?
If Heuermann didn’t kill these 6… then we’re being asked to believe that another killer — or killers — used the same remote dumping ground. Seems unlikely. So: while anything is possible, I believe he is likely responsible for the 10 bodies out there.
Why wasn’t the case solved earlier? We’ve written about this before — it seems the Suffolk detectives had what they needed to wrap this up in 2010. But: Why is nobody questioning the FBI?
Recall, the story goes that Suffolk PD had a contentious relationship during the earlier investigation, and that Suffolk would not let the FBI assist.
But in his press conference announcing the recent arrests, DA Tierney stated that in 2012, “an FBI agent drove the cell phone zones” where Heuermann had apparently used one of the victim’s phones, and “mapped” them. So the Bureau was involved as early as 2012.
Further, the FBI could have gained jurisdiction due to the fact that the girls all apparently used craigslist — an internet forum — to book their clients. And several of the girls had in fact traveled across state lines to allegedly meet with Heuermann.
So, if the FBI wanted in on the LISK case from its inception: Why didn’t they just assert federal jurisdiction — and take it?
Wait, what?
Word comes now that Carlee Russell will be charged in her fake abduction case. Police lamented at a presser that they could only charge her with misdemeanors (link).
(Carlee Russell mugshot. She certainly looks remorseful.… Source: Hoover Police Dept.)
Well how about this? Charge her — but demand restitution. Her apparent stunt cost the Alabama taxpayers an estimated $100k.
(Reports that she took in money from a GoFundMe appear inaccurate — so that money is unavailable. So — get to work, Carlee).
But I have to ask: How could our media have believed this story?
The premise — that a human trafficking cartel trolled a toddler along the side of a highway so as to kidnap unsuspecting women — is ludicrous. Consider: What are the chances that such a thing would work smoothly? Especially because such a scenario is more likely to attract the police than random young women?
Of course, pointing this out would have made me the bad guy — racist, sexist, etc.
But this was b.s. from the get-go. I mean, please.
And Finally… A Perp Who Knows His Place
I once read a description of police work as, “brute hilarity.” This pretty much captures that (click for the vid):
There were many awful media takes in 2024, but @Morning_Joe saying in March of 2024 that Joe Biden 2024 was the best version of Joe he’d ever seen is my take for the worst of all. Yours? Share your nominees below.
10 years ago, Detectives Ramos & Liu from the @NYPD84Pct were targeted for their blue uniforms & were assassinated because of a man’s hatred for police. Today, we remember our two fallen detectives who were killed while protecting NYers & continue our vow to #NeverForget.
