Thousands of demonstrators from across the nation are set to gather in Chicago this week during the Democratic National Convention, where Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, will make their case for the presidency.

As of Sunday, the Chicago Tribune reported that at least seven major protests, focusing on issues like abortion rights and economic inequality, have been approved by city officials.

The most significant of these protests are expected to come from groups opposing U.S. support for Israel, particularly calling for an end to aid to Israel and the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

Hatem Abudayyeh, chair of the U.S. Palestinian Community Network, told the Washington Post that despite President Biden stepping down, “we hold this administration responsible for the continued war and genocide.”

“Our focus is on the Democratic Party leadership, and ‘Killer Kamala’ is a key figure,” Abudayyeh stated.

On the other side, the Israeli American Council plans to hold a rally on Wednesday to show support for Israel.

Aya Shechter, the group’s chief programming officer, told the Chicago Tribune their message is clear: “We stand with Israel.” The rally will also emphasize the plight of those still held hostage by Hamas.

With tens of thousands expected to converge on various parts of the city during the DNC, Mayor Brandon Johnson assured on Friday that all protesters would be welcomed.

“They have no need to worry about their First Amendment rights,” Johnson said. “I will ensure these individuals have what they need to have their voices heard.”

However, Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling warned that authorities would step in if protests become unruly.

“We will not allow anyone to come here and wreak havoc on the city,” Snelling said earlier this week, as reported by the Chicago Tribune.

Additional rallies are anticipated throughout the week, even those lacking official permits.
