If this author sounds familiar, you may remember him from one of the best NYPD movies ever made. In our first installment of Weekend Buff, we reviewed the film Prince of the City (1981). The film is a somewhat fictionalized account of the corruption and cooperation of NYPD Detective Robert Leuci. That story was originally told by Robert Daley in the book by the same name.
From a missing daughter to a dead father and back again, this unfolding case has remained largely under the radar, raising far more questions than answers with each new development.
For decades the DeCavalcante Crime Family ruled the streets of northern New Jersey. They engaged in drug sales, gambling, and extortion rackets. They maintained their power through the time-honored code of, “omerta.” Omerta is the mafia tradition imported from Italy that encourages silence and non-cooperation with authorities.
Daniel Penny is a free man today. Many were happy, some shrugged, and some were angry at the outcome of the case. Most cops, and others who can be placed in a similar situation, were glad to see Penny exonerated. It seems like most New York City politicians had the opposite reaction.
So the NYPD, FBI, and Atlanta PD are presently scouring for the cold-blooded killer of UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson. At this writing, the killer remains unapprehended.
